Dam Boulders

Just outside Crieff, Dam Boulders is exactly what the name suggests - a collection of massive stone blocks scattered along a river valley, the result of ancient glacial movement rather than any engineered dam. You can walk among them, clamber over them, and spend a decent hour poking about if you're into geology or simply fancy something different from the usual park circuit.

It's brilliant for families with kids who like climbing and exploring, though you'll want proper footwear and a head for heights in places. The boulders sit in a riverine setting that feels wilder than manicured parkland, which some people love and others find a bit underwhelming. The walk from the nearest car park is straightforward enough, but there's not a tremendous amount to do once you've had a good look round and taken photos. Worth combining with a stay at Loch Earn Leisure Park or Comrie Croft rather than making it a standalone trip.

The site is completely free and accessible year-round, though winter rain makes the rocks slippery underfoot - autumn or early spring are your best bets. Allow an hour or so unless you're proper into geology and want to spend time reading the landscape. History buffs might get less out of it than walkers or families after a spot of easy adventure. It's a decent half-hour detour if you're touring the area around Crieff, but don't go out of your way thinking it's a major draw.
