Derby Local Studies Library

The Local Studies Library sits quietly in Derby's city centre, and it's one of those places you'd walk past a dozen times without realising what you're missing. Inside, you'll find an unexpectedly vast collection of maps, photographs, documents and local records that tell the story of Derbyshire from medieval times onwards. The family history section is genuinely useful - original parish records, census data, old street directories - the kind of material that makes genealogy hobbyists actually excited.

It's best suited to people with a specific interest: family history researchers, local history enthusiasts, architects studying old buildings, anyone trying to trace their Derby roots. Kids won't find much to occupy them here unless they're already into that sort of thing. Allow an hour if you're just browsing, but researchers often lose an entire afternoon to the place.

Admission is free, which is brilliant value given what's on offer. The staff know the collections inside out and won't mind answering questions. Go midweek if possible - weekends can be busy with people working through their family trees.

If you're based at Hill Farm Camping & Caravan Park just four and a half miles out, it's a straightforward trip into the city. Combine it with a walk around Derby's Georgian Quarter or a visit to the Museum and Art Gallery nearby. The library won't set your pulse racing, but if local history or genealogy matters to you, it's genuinely worth a couple of hours.
