Denholm Green

The green itself is small - barely ten minutes from Hawick town centre - but that's rather the point. It's a proper working nature reserve where you can actually see something, rather than wandering about hoping a bird flies past. The wet grassland and ponds attract waders and wildfowl, especially in spring and autumn when migration's on. Summer brings dragonflies that genuinely distract you from why you came.

Walkers get the most from this spot. It's not a destination hike, but if you're based near Hawick - or at Stouslie Snugs Luxury Farm Glamping a few miles out - it's a solid morning or early afternoon stop. The paths are flat and straightforward, so families with younger kids won't struggle, though there's not much to hold attention beyond the actual nature watching. Bring binoculars if you've got them.

I'd allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're keen on birds. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so plan accordingly. Spring is best for spotting - the reserve's relatively quiet then, and the light's kinder than in high summer glare.

Fits well with a Scottish Borders break if you're doing the circuit of smaller parks and reserves rather than gunning for the big attractions. It won't compete with Floors Castle or the walks up Minto, but it's worth the detour if you're already south of Hawick.
