Dell Piece West Nature Reserve

There's a proper stretch of wetland and woodland just outside Emsworth that most visitors completely miss. Dell Piece West Nature Reserve is the sort of place where you'll actually spot things - dragonflies skimming the water, woodpeckers if you're lucky, the whole lot of wading birds doing their thing in the shallows. It's not vast, and you won't spend all day here, but that's rather the point. An hour's wander through the paths is enough to properly see what's going on without the crowds you'd get at a major country estate.

Walkers come away satisfied. It's flat, the paths are decent, and there's genuine wildlife action rather than manicured gardens. If you're staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - The Old Dairy Farm or Wallops Wood are both excellent, just a few miles away - this makes a cracking morning outing before breakfast becomes an issue. Families with children who actually want to spot something real (not just follow a loop) will find it rewarding, though very small kids might need coaxing to stay interested past the first pond.

The reserve operates year-round, and honestly, autumn's probably when you'll see the most activity as birds are moving through. It's free to access, which helps. Bring binoculars if you've got them - proper field glasses make the difference between 'oh, there's a bird' and actually identifying what you're looking at. Worth the detour if you're in the area, though not the sort of destination you'd drive an hour to reach on its own.
