Delapre lake

The lake sits on the grounds of Delapre Abbey, just south of Northampton town centre, and it's a proper peaceful spot when the weather's decent. You get a decent walk around the water, with the abbey buildings - dating back to medieval times - providing a bit of atmosphere even if they're only partial ruins. The main appeal is straightforward: a gentle circuit with ducks, some benches if you want to sit a while, and enough space that it doesn't feel rammed even on weekends.

It's worth an hour or so for a casual stroll, maybe more if you're into the abbey's history. Families with young kids will manage it fine - no serious hills, and there's usually plenty to spot on the water. The surrounding grounds are open and green, so it's easy enough to extend your walk if you fancy it.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Sywell Country Park and Kirkely Meadows are both within striking distance - this makes a nice half-hour detour rather than a day trip in itself. Blisworth Park, a shade closer, gives you another option for combining a few things into one outing. The lake itself is free to access and there are no obvious opening times to worry about, though daylight hours make sense. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be quieter if you prefer it that way.
