De'ils Specs

Two narrow rock formations jut out from the hillside near Castle Douglas like a pair of enormous spectacles - hence the name. De'ils Specs is genuinely eerie; standing between them, you feel the weight of something ancient and purposeful, though what exactly remains unclear. Archaeological work suggests they're Neolithic or Bronze Age markers, possibly part of a ceremonial route or burial landscape.

It's a short walk from the road, maybe ten minutes on foot, and the payoff is immediate. The rocks command the landscape in a way that feels deliberate rather than accidental. You're not scrambling about for hours here - it's a quick detour that rewards you with something genuinely strange and atmospheric. The views across Dumfries and Galloway roll out behind you nicely.

Walkers will get the most from this. Kids might find it unsettling rather than thrilling, depending on their age and temperament.
