Deer park

The deer are the whole draw here, and they're genuinely worth watching if you catch them on a good day. This is a working nature reserve near Llandeilo where you can wander through woodland and fields hoping to spot fallow and muntjac deer going about their business - they're skittish, so mornings tend to work better than afternoons when the light gets harsh and they've retreated into cover.

It's the sort of place that rewards patience rather than spectacle. Bring binoculars and move slowly. Kids under ten will likely lose interest after 20 minutes unless they're already keen on wildlife; older children and serious birders or naturalists will get far more from it. The walking is gentle - nothing strenuous, mostly on established paths through mixed woodland.

The reserve is free to access, though do check locally as opening hours and facilities can change seasonally. Allow an hour, maybe 90 minutes if you're taking photographs. Early morning in spring or autumn is genuinely your best bet for sightings.

Located barely half a mile from Ravenscroft Retreats, it slots perfectly into a wider Carmarthenshire break - combine it with the castles and river walks around Llandeilo itself, or use Towy Valley Caravan Park as your base if you're doing a longer stay in the valley. On its own, though, it's more of a pleasant add-on than a destination worth driving hours for. Real value if you're already in the area.
