Deehommed Mountain

The walk up Deehommed Mountain rewards you with views across the Mourne range that justify every step of the climb. It's not a massive peak - you're looking at a proper hillwalk rather than technical mountaineering - but the vistas back towards Castlewellan and across the surrounding countryside make it a solid afternoon out.

This is walker territory. The route takes you through moorland and grassland with decent paths underfoot, though it can be boggy after rain so bring proper boots. Allow a couple of hours for the ascent and descent if you're not rushing. On a clear day you'll spot across to the Irish Sea; on a cloudy one, you're mainly paying for the exercise and sense of achievement.

Families with older kids will manage fine. Younger ones might find it a bit of a slog without much scenery payoff until the summit. It's free to access, which is always welcome, and there's car parking at the trailhead.

If you're based at Slieve Croob Camping or Pine Tree Hollow Glamping - both excellent sites just down the road - this fits nicely into a broader Mourne walking itinerary. It's less famous than the bigger peaks, which means fewer crowds. Worth combining with a visit to Castlewellan Forest Park to make a proper day of it. The mountain itself isn't particularly challenging, but it delivers solid rewards for moderate effort.
