About Dearden Wood
It's the sort of place you'd come for a proper walk rather than a quick photo stop. The canopy's dense enough that even on a busy day you'll hear more birdsong than people. Dog walkers seem to know about it, and families with older kids do well here - there's real woodland to explore without the theme-park feel of managed attractions.
Bring decent boots. The paths can get boggy depending on the season, and the forest floor's uneven in places. A couple of hours walking works well, though you could easily spend half a day if you meander. There's no café or facilities that we could find, so pack what you need.
The big draw is that it sits just five miles from Castle Farm Campsite, making it an ideal morning escape if you're staying in the area. Stamford itself - all Georgian architecture and riverside walks - is close by if you want to mix woodland rambling with market-town pottering. The combination of both gives you a proper East Midlands break without the predictable tourist trail.
