Dean's Park

Just outside York, Dean's Park is a proper slice of Yorkshire woodland that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a visit if you're in the area. It's a nature reserve where you can walk among trees, spot birds, and actually hear yourself think - rare enough near a city of York's size.

The paths wind through decent woodland habitat. You'll find the usual suspects: blue tits, wrens, the occasional nuthatch if you're lucky. There's water too, which means dragonflies in summer and a bit of life in the undergrowth. It's not dramatic - no waterfalls or rare orchids to get worked up about - but that's rather the point. This is a place for a quiet morning or afternoon ramble, not a destination visit.

Walkers get the most from it, particularly those who appreciate the understated. Kids will be fine for an hour or so before they start asking what's next. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars. If you're after something more obviously spectacular, you're probably better served by the Yorkshire Dales proper, but if you're based at Wagtail Park or Nurseries Caravan Park in York and want a gentle woodland outing without driving, this fits the bill.

The reserve appears to be free to access, which is just decent. Allow a couple of hours to walk the main routes without rushing. Early morning or dusk is best for wildlife spotting. Spring and summer obviously bring more birds and insects, but it's worth a go any season.
