Wander into Dean Plantation and you're walking through proper old-growth woodland that feels like it belongs in a different century. This Wiltshire forest sits just outside Cirencester, and it's the sort of place where the canopy closes in above you and everything goes quiet except for birdsong.

It's woodland rather than manicured parkland - think gnarled oaks, bracken underfoot, and paths that wind rather than direct. You'll spot the occasional fallen trunk being reclaimed by moss, which is exactly how a forest should look. No theme park energy here. This is the real thing for people who actually want to walk in the woods rather than just tick off a photo stop.

The plantation suits serious walkers most. Kids will enjoy it if they're old enough to manage muddy paths without complaining every fifty metres.
