Dean Hill

The walk up Dean Hill from Salisbury takes about forty minutes if you're reasonably fit, and the reward is a proper 360-degree panorama across Wiltshire's chalklands. On a clear day you can pick out the spire of Salisbury Cathedral poking up from the town below, and the ridgeline stretches away towards Dorset. It's not a dramatic summit - you won't find dramatic peaks this far south - but the views are genuine and the walk itself is pleasant enough, with good paths most of the way.

This is walker territory, mostly. Families with young kids might find the climb tedious, though older ones who've got their legs under them will manage it fine. History buffs will be interested to know the hill sits within an Iron Age landscape; there's archaeology underfoot if you know what to look for.

Go early morning to avoid the midweek crowds from Salisbury, or frankly any morning beats the afternoon traffic from town. Allow two hours all in - an hour up, thirty minutes on top, thirty minutes back. The hill is free to access, and you can park in Salisbury itself or near the footpath entrance.

If you're based at Green Hill Farm Holiday Village or The Meadow Glamping - both just a few miles out - this makes a decent half-day outing alongside exploring Salisbury's cathedral and market town itself. Nothing life-changing, but solid walking country.
