Dead Island Bog (SAC)

The bog stretches out flat and vast, a proper moorland wilderness that catches you off guard when you're used to the greener, rolling bits of County Antrim. Dead Island Bog is a Special Area of Conservation - which means it's protected for good reason. The peat landscape here supports plants you won't see everywhere: sundews, sphagnum mosses, and if you're lucky, some unusual birds. It's not dramatic in the postcard sense. There are no views that'll make you gasp. What you get instead is space and quietness and the slightly eerie feeling of walking on ground that's been forming for thousands of years.

The nearest proper town is Ballymena, about twenty minutes' drive away, which helps you gauge how remote this feels. Walking here demands decent waterproof boots - bog water doesn't look deep but it absolutely soaks through - and ideally a map or local knowledge, as paths aren't always obvious. Most people allow two to three hours, depending on where you wander. Birdwatchers and plant enthusiasts will find real value here; families with young kids might get bored once the initial novelty of squelchy ground wears off.
