David P J Ross Magna Carta Vault, Lincoln Castle

The vault sits inside Lincoln Castle, and it's genuinely one of those moments where history stops being abstract. You're standing in front of one of only four surviving copies of the 1215 Magna Carta - the actual document that started the whole "nobody's above the law" conversation. It's behind glass, obviously, but the weight of it hits you.

The vault itself is a fairly tight, modern space - don't expect vast galleries. What you get instead is focused: the charter, some context about what it meant, and why this particular copy matters. History buffs will spend a solid hour here, properly absorbed. Younger kids might find it a bit text-heavy unless they're already interested in medieval England, though the sheer age of the thing can grip them for ten minutes at least.

It's free to enter the castle grounds, though there's usually a small charge for the vault itself - worth checking ahead on their website. Allow 30-45 minutes if you're just doing the vault, longer if you explore the rest of the castle and walls while you're up there.

Lincoln itself is compact enough for a base, and the nearby caravan sites - Hartsholme Country Park is closest at just over two miles - make it easy to stay put. The castle grounds are worth a wander regardless, with decent views across the city. Not a day-long attraction on its own, but proper essential if you're spending time in Lincoln.
