Daubuz Moors

Out on the moorland between Shortlanesend and the deeper reaches of Cornwall's mining country, Daubuz Moors opens up into something properly wild. It's the kind of place where you can actually breathe - rolling heath and rough grassland that doesn't get choked with day-trippers. The moors themselves are free to roam, which means you can walk for as long as you fancy without anyone charging you for the privilege.

If you're the type who finds pleasure in solitude and big skies, this works. Walkers get the most from it - there's no visitor centre, no facilities, just you and the landscape. In spring and early summer the heather comes through, which lifts the whole thing considerably. Come in wet weather and you'll understand why this corner of Cornwall kept itself to itself for centuries.

It's not a half-hour stop. Plan for a proper couple of hours at least if you're doing any real walking. The nearest actual settlement is Shortlanesend, though there's not much to it. What makes Daubuz useful for a caravan or glamping holiday is proximity to places like Carnon Downs Caravan and Motorhome Club (3.4 miles) or Wrinklers Wood Glamping (5.3 miles). After a couple of nights in a static van, having wild moorland on your doorstep beats paying for another theme park.

Not for everyone, mind. Kids will get restless fast. But if you want to remember why you came to Cornwall in the first place - rather than why everyone else did - this is it.
