Darden Lough

The water here is proper still on most days - Darden Lough sits quiet and unassuming just outside Morpeth, the sort of place locals know but tourists often miss. It's a small lake, really, nothing that'll take your breath away with dramatic scenery, but that's rather the point.

You can walk around it easily enough in under an hour, which makes it ideal if you're based at Whitton Glebe Caravan Park nearby and fancy a gentle stretch of the legs. The path is straightforward and flat - no scrambling involved. Birds are the main draw: water fowl, reed warblers in season, and if you're lucky you'll spot a heron waiting by the shallows. Bring binoculars and a bird book.

Families with young kids will manage fine for a casual outing, though they won't be entertained for hours on end. Walkers and birdwatchers get far more from it. The water reflects the sky nicely on clear days, and there's something calming about circling a small lake without crowds or facilities to worry about.

It's free to access and open as long as you need it. Spring and early summer work best when the birds are active and the reeds are lush. In winter it can feel a touch bleak. If you're exploring Northumberland's nature reserves, this works well alongside a wider park holiday, but don't plan an entire day around it - treat it as a morning walk between other things.
