Dallas Castle

The ruins of Dallas Castle sit on a low hill just outside Forres, commanding views across Moray farmland that frankly feel more impressive than the castle itself warrants. What remains is mostly stonework - a rectangular keep from the 13th century, crumbled but still standing, with enough of the walls left to understand the original layout. You can walk right up to it without fuss or formality, which is either refreshing or underwhelming depending on what you expected.

It's the kind of place where history enthusiasts will spend twenty minutes poking about, reading the weathered information board if there is one, and contemplating medieval life. Kids under eight will get bored quickly unless they're into climbing rubble, which, fair warning, can be unstable. The surrounding countryside is pleasant enough for a short stroll, and the walk from Forres takes about thirty minutes if you fancy it on foot.

If you're staying at nearby spots like The Loft Glamping & Camping, it makes a decent afternoon filler rather than a destination in itself. The free access is the main selling point - no fees, no gift shop, no fenced-off areas. Locals clearly use this as a casual walk, and you won't fight crowds. Go on a clear day when the views actually matter. Rain makes it miserable and muddy. It works best if you're combining it with Forres itself or heading towards more substantial attractions further into Aberdeenshire.
