Dales Spinney

The woodland paths through Dales Spinney feel properly isolated given it's barely outside Loughborough. This is a small forest - don't roll up expecting vast acreage - but it's the sort of place where you can actually hear birdsong without traffic noise ruining the moment.

It's straightforward walking territory. The paths wind through mixed woodland, nothing dramatic in terms of elevation or technical difficulty, so families with younger legs will manage fine. Older kids might find it a bit tame if they're after adventure, but if you're keen on spotting woodland birds or just want an hour's worth of green air, it does the job.

The real appeal sits in how it breaks up a caravan park stay. Ragdale Glamping and Hill Top are both within a few miles, so this becomes that morning walk before heading back for breakfast, or a late afternoon wander to stretch out after a day elsewhere. You won't need more than 90 minutes here, realistically. There's nothing to pay, no visitor centre, no facilities - it's just trees and paths.

Best visited when it's not waterlogged, which in Leicestershire narrows things down a bit. Spring or early autumn work well. Winter walks here are fairly dreary unless you're specifically after that bare-branch aesthetic. Don't expect a destination experience - think of it as the sort of woodland you stumble across when you're exploring properly rather than ticking boxes.
