Dalchirnmore

Out towards Newtonmore, tucked into the Highland landscape, lies Dalchirnmore - a Bronze Age burial cairn that's been sitting there quietly for the better part of three thousand years. It's not flashy. No visitor centre, no tea room, no interpretation boards telling you what to think. Just a substantial stone mound in open moorland, the kind of thing you stumble upon and realise you've walked back in time without needing anyone's permission.

The cairn itself is genuinely impressive once you're standing next to it - proper substantial, built with purpose and real effort. Archaeologists have poked around here and found evidence of cremation burials, which tells you this was a significant spot for whoever lived in these glens. The views across the moorland are worth the detour alone, and the walk isn't punishing - though it does involve actual countryside rather than a manicured path.

This appeals most to history buffs and serious walkers who've had their fill of the honeypot attractions. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming on its own, but it pairs brilliantly with the wider Newtonmore area. Laggan Glamping and Invernahavon Caravan Park are both within easy striking distance, making it a solid afternoon excursion during a holiday in the park.

Bring decent footwear - the ground can be boggy even when it looks dry. There's no charge and no facilities, so come prepared. Allow a couple of hours if you're making a proper walk of it rather than just nipping out for a quick look.
