Cygnet Lake

The water sits flat and still most mornings, reflecting whatever sky decides to show up. Cygnet Lake, just outside Northampton, is a proper working gravel pit that's been given a second life as a fishing spot and nature reserve - the sort of place where locals know about it but you won't find coachloads of tourists queuing up.

It's genuinely worth a detour if you're into birds or fishing. The lake draws all manner of waterfowl, especially winter migrants, and the banks are lined with the kind of vegetation that keeps photographers and twitchers occupied for hours. The walk around it takes a couple of hours at a steady pace - nothing strenuous, but it's open enough that you feel you've actually been somewhere by the end.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Grendon Lakes is only five miles away and Moon Valley Glamping Retreat slightly further - this makes an excellent half-day outing. The glamping crowd especially seem to appreciate somewhere this low-key and genuinely quiet. Bring binoculars if you've got them. Bring a packed lunch either way, because there's nowhere to grab a coffee nearby.

Timing matters. Early morning in autumn or winter is when it really comes alive with birds. Summer weekends get a bit busier with anglers, which is fine but less atmospheric. It's free to visit and access appears unrestricted, though obviously respect the fishing activities happening there.
