Cwm-Pen-y-Benglog

There's a Bronze Age burial chamber tucked into the Pembrokeshire countryside near Newport, and it's the sort of place that rewards a bit of effort to find. Cwm-Pen-y-Benglog is a chambered cairn - essentially a 4,000-year-old tomb made of stacked stone - sitting quietly in open moorland where you can actually hear yourself think.

The site itself is modest by archaeological standards. You're looking at a partially excavated stone chamber with some original slabs still in place, surrounded by what remains of the cairn mound. There's no visitor centre, no car park with facilities, no interpretation boards spelling everything out - you just get the stones and the landscape, which honestly is rather nice. Archaeologists reckon it was built during the Neolithic period, used for burying the dead over several generations.

This is proper walker territory. Getting there involves a trek across fields from Newport, and you'll need to be comfortable navigating without signage. It's not arduous, but it's not a ten-minute stroll either. Bring wellies if it's been wet - the ground can be boggy. History enthusiasts and archaeology bores will find it genuinely worthwhile; casual tourists after an easy photo stop will probably find it underwhelming.

If you're based at Llwyngwair Manor Holiday Park just a few miles away, it's a decent half-day outing combined with exploring Newport itself. Allow two to three hours total, including the walk. Best visited in dry weather when visibility is decent and the ground isn't treacherous. Free to visit, naturally - there's nothing to pay at a Bronze Age tomb.
