Cuthill Sands

A long, quiet stretch of sand that runs north of Tain, Cuthill Sands is the sort of beach you stumble upon rather than plan for. The sand is genuinely golden when the light hits it right, and at low tide you get proper space to walk without bumping into other people. It's not dramatic - no cliffs, no rockpools, no Instagram moments - but that's rather the point.

You're looking at a straightforward coastal walk here. Park near Tain and head out along the shoreline for as long as you fancy. An hour gets you well away from any crowds. The water's cold, obviously, but paddlers don't mind and it's safe enough for a dip if you're brave. Dogs absolutely love it, and there's enough space that even in summer you'll find quiet corners.

This works best for walkers and families after somewhere low-key to stretch their legs. Kids under five might get bored after thirty minutes unless you're collecting shells or chasing the tide. Bring a packed lunch and a windproof - it can get properly fresh out here.

If you're staying at Dornoch Caravan & Camping Park just up the coast, Cuthill Sands is a natural morning walk. It's less developed than some Highland beaches, which means fewer facilities but also fewer people. Free to visit, no set hours - just turn up. Best at low tide when you've got the most sand to play with.
