Cusworth Hall Museum

There's a proper Georgian mansion sitting on the edge of Doncaster that's absolutely worth half a day if you're staying in the area. Cusworth Hall isn't a stuffy old property - the museum inside tells the story of how ordinary people in South Yorkshire actually lived, which beats the usual "look at the fancy furniture" routine hands down.

The house itself dates back to 1740, all honey-coloured stone and grand views across the parkland. Inside you'll find social history displays covering everything from Roman times through to the twentieth century, with enough interactive bits to keep kids engaged rather than dragging behind complaining. The costume collection is genuinely impressive, and they've done the labelling well - proper context, not just dates and names.

Walkers will love the 16 acres of parkland surrounding the place. There's a network of paths through woodland and open grass, and on a clear day the views back towards Doncaster are excellent. Give yourself a solid two hours minimum: one for the house, one for wandering the grounds. Families with younger children might stretch it to three hours if they're the exploring type.

It's only a couple of miles from Sunnyview Touring Park if you're based there, making it a natural morning visit before heading elsewhere. Check ahead for opening hours and admission prices before you go - these things change - but it's the sort of museum that rewards a proper visit rather than a rushed tick-off.
