Custard HQ is less stuffy gallery, more working studio space where you can actually watch artists graft away rather than stand in hushed silence staring at a blank canvas. The space itself is worth a visit purely for the industrial bones of the building. High ceilings, exposed brick, natural light pouring through enormous windows - it's the kind of place that makes you remember why old warehouses get converted in the first place. It's brilliant for anyone serious about contemporary art, but equally decent for a Saturday browse if you're in Folkestone anyway. You won't need more than an hour unless there's something specific on that grabs you. Pop in, see what's happening, grab a coffee if they've got one on site. Free admission is typical for artist-run spaces like this, though do check their opening hours before you trek down - smaller galleries can be a bit erratic with their times.

If you're staying at Varne Ridge Holiday Park or Greenhill Glamping just down the road, it's well worth the short drive into Folkestone proper. Pairs nicely with a walk along the Leas or exploring the town's ongoing regeneration. Not a destination in itself, but a proper addition to a Kentish coast break.
