This is where the Duke of Cumberland camped during the 1746 aftermath of Culloden, a reminder of one of Scotland's darkest chapters and a landscape that refuses to let you forget it.

There's not much to do here in the traditional sense. You walk to it, you stand before it, you think. The Highlands around Inverness are layered with Jacobite history, and Cumberland Stone occupies a peculiar position in that narrative - a marker of occupation rather than triumph. History enthusiasts will find it worth the detour; casual tourists expecting something more visible might feel underwhelmed.

The surrounding moorland is beautiful in that austere Highland way, particularly in late summer when the heather turns purple. If you're staying at Ardtower Caravan Park just down the road, it's close enough for a morning walk without requiring a major expedition. Allow an hour including the walk itself. There's no visitor infrastructure - bring water, wear decent boots, and go when the weather's reasonable because exposed moorland in rain loses its appeal quickly.

Culloden itself lies a short drive away and offers proper context if you want to understand what this stone actually represents. Visit both if Highland history matters to you. Skip it if you're after Instagram moments or attractions with facilities.
