On a clear day you can pick out lochs and rolling farmland stretching toward the Solway, which justifies the effort. In poor visibility it's rather dull, so pick your weather. It's absolutely free and there's no faffing about with gates or restrictions. Worth it as part of a broader walk round the area - pair it with a poke round Castle Douglas itself or extend a route toward Loch Ken Holiday Park.
