Culbokie Village Green

The village green at Culbokie is one of those places that rewards you for taking the minor road off the A862 near Dingwall. It's a proper little nature reserve - nothing grand or manicured, just a genuine slice of Highland landscape where locals have had the sense to let things grow as they please.

You get woodland paths threading through native trees, open grassland that shifts with the seasons, and enough quiet corners to actually hear yourself think. The reserve works best for walkers who aren't after dramatic peaks or waterfall photo ops - this is about the smaller details. Spot woodland birds, watch for deer if you're lucky early morning, and take time with the wildflowers when they're out. Kids will enjoy it without getting overstimulated, though it's not a playground sort of place.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is rather the point. It's free to access and you can spend anything from 45 minutes to a couple of hours depending on how slowly you move. The paths are manageable year-round, though they can get boggy after rain.

If you're based at Dingwall Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Blackrock Caravan Park - both less than five miles away - this makes an easy morning or afternoon outing to break up a park holiday. It's not spectacular enough to drive hours for on its own, but as a local circuit walk it's well worth knowing about. The beauty is in the understatement.
