Mount Eagle

The walk up Mount Eagle takes you straight into proper Highland terrain, with views that open out across the Black Isle and down toward the Cromarty Firth. It's not a massive summit - you're looking at around 400 metres - but the climb is steep enough to feel like you've earned the panorama at the top.

From Dingwall, it's a straightforward drive to the trailhead, and the path itself is well-trodden without being overcrowded. On a clear day, the vistas stretch for miles. On a grey one, you're socked in by cloud within twenty minutes of starting - which is the Highlands, really. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're moving at a decent pace; families with younger kids might want to factor in more time, though the terrain does get a bit boggy in places.

Historically minded visitors won't find much at the summit itself beyond the view, but the location matters. You're standing in country that's been criss-crossed by everyone from Jacobites to drovers, and the landscape tells that story more than any plaque could.

Dingwall Camping and Caravanning Club Site puts you closest, under 6 miles away. It's the sort of walk that clears your head without demanding a full day's commitment, assuming the weather plays ball.
