Culbokie Loch

A shallow freshwater loch about three miles north of Dingwall, Culbokie sits quietly at the edge of the Black Isle peninsula - the sort of place you'd stumble upon rather than deliberately hunt down. The water's dark and mirror-still most days, backed by low hills that wouldn't impress an Alpine climber but work perfectly for a gentle Highland panorama.

There's a small car park and a decent walking path that loops the loch's perimeter - takes about forty minutes at a normal pace, longer if you're the type to stop and stare. It's proper flat terrain, so no scrambling required. Birdwatchers genuinely rate this spot; you'll see grebes, teal, and herons if you keep quiet and patient. Families with young kids will manage it without complaint, though there's not much to do once you've walked round - no playground, no café, no facilities to speak of. It's purely a walk-and-gaze kind of place.

The loch works well as a half-morning detour if you're staying at either Dingwall Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Blackrock Caravan Park. Close enough not to be a faff, atmospheric enough to justify the detour. Go early to dodge any other walkers, and bring binoculars if you've got them. Spring and autumn are best - fewer midges, better light. Don't expect a day-tripper destination; expect a quiet corner of the Highlands where you can actually hear yourself think.
