Cud Hill

The walk up Cud Hill rewards you with proper views across the Cotswolds - the sort of prospect that makes the climb worthwhile, especially if you're based near Stroud. It's a straightforward ascent without the drama of some Cotswold peaks, which means families and casual walkers won't feel out of their depth. Allow an hour return from the car, maybe longer if you're taking photos at the top or stopping to catch your breath.

What makes it decent is the simplicity of it all. You get here, you climb it, and you can see for miles on a clear day. No faffing about with multiple routes or complicated navigation. The terrain underfoot is typical Cotswold - can be muddy after rain, so proper boots are sensible rather than a suggestion.

If you're staying at one of the glamping sites scattered around - Painswick or Cherry Tree are both within easy striking distance - this makes a solid half-day addition to your break. It's the sort of walk you do mid-week when the weather's decent, not something you'd plan a trip around by itself. But combined with exploring Stroud's independent shops and cafes, or tackling some of the longer trails through the valleys, it slots in nicely.

Summer's the obvious choice, when the view from the top is clearest and you won't be trudging through mud. Spring's pleasant too if the ground's dried out. Worth doing, but don't expect drama - just solid Cotswold walking.
