Scottsquar Hill

The climb up Scottsquar Hill from Stroud takes about forty minutes if you're reasonably fit, though the final push gets properly steep. What makes it worth the effort isn't a dramatic summit building or tourist infrastructure - it's the view across the Severn Valley that justifies every breathless step. On a clear day you can see right across to the Forest of Dean, and the town of Stroud spreads out below like something from a child's map.

It's a walker's hill rather than a casual stroll, so bring decent shoes and water. The path is well-trodden enough that you won't lose your way, though it's muddy in wet weather. Allow an hour and a half if you're stopping to appreciate the view properly, which you absolutely should.

Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the ascent tedious. Serious hikers treating it as part of a longer Cotswold ramble will get proper value from the route. It's the sort of place you go on a sunny Saturday morning rather than a rainy Tuesday.
