Cruereach Hill

The walk up Cruereach Hill takes roughly an hour from Sanquhar, and on a clear day the views across the Scottish Lowlands are genuinely worth the effort. You're not scrambling up anything mad here - it's a proper walking hill, steep in places but nothing technical, and the path is reasonably well-trodden.

What makes it worthwhile is the perspective you get. From the top you can see right across Dumfries and Galloway, and the landscape rolls on in waves of moorland and forestry. On our visit the light was sliding across the hills in that particular way it does in late afternoon, which made everything look rather special. The actual summit is unremarkable - just a cairn and a post - but the reason you're up there is the space around you.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's the kind of walk families with older kids would manage fine, though younger ones might find the return leg a bit tedious. The climb isn't relentless, which helps. I'd allow two hours for the round trip if you're not rushing, maybe longer if you want to sit about at the top.

If you're staying at Sunnyside Lodges nearby - and it's only a few miles away - Cruereach Hill makes a solid half-day outing. You won't need to pay anything or book ahead. Just turn up and walk. Best in decent weather obviously, when the visibility actually rewards the climb.
