Crubenmore

The standing stones at Crubenmore rise from the moorland south of Newtonmore like a proper puzzle nobody's quite solved. Three stones remain upright, Bronze Age markers that have watched over the Spey Valley for four thousand years. It's not a visitor centre or managed site - you'll find yourself alone on rough grass, reading the landscape the way the ancients might have done.

The stones themselves aren't enormous, which some find disappointing. They're roughly human-height, weathered grey, and honestly the setting matters more than the monument. On a clear day, the Highland peaks frame everything nicely. On a misty one, it feels genuinely eerie - which is half the appeal.

Walkers will get the most from Crubenmore. It's not a destination by itself; it's a 15-minute detour on longer moorland rambles around Newtonmore. History enthusiasts might spend 20 minutes examining the stones and pondering their purpose. Families with young children often find it a bit underwhelming unless you're already committed to Bronze Age archaeology.

Free to visit, obviously - there's nothing to lock and nobody manning a gate. Allow half an hour if you're treating it as a specific stop, longer if you're threading it into a bigger walk. Spring and early autumn work well; winter can be boggy and bleak, summer occasionally too hot for the exposed moorland.

Stay at either Invernahavon or Laggan if you're basing yourself nearby. Both are excellent, and this sits perfectly between them as a morning detour before tackling the broader Highland walking network.
