Cruach Chaorainn

The walk up Cruach Chaorainn is a proper hill rather than a mountain, which means you can knock it out in a couple of hours without needing crampons or a detailed map. From Tarbert, the trailhead isn't obvious - you're essentially heading into moorland that feels wild but stays manageable. The views across Loch Tarbert and over towards Kintyre are the main draw, though on a clear day the perspective south towards Arran and the Mull is genuinely something. It's a 600-metre hill with a bare, windswept top that delivers without being a slog. Families with older kids will find it accessible, though younger ones might flag on the moorland sections where there's no obvious path. The terrain is rough and boggy in places, so proper boots matter more than on manicured trails. You're looking at around three hours return if you set a steady pace and linger at the top. Go when the weather's cooperating - this isn't a destination that rewards a grey day. The nearest holiday bases are The Gather, just over two miles away with excellent reviews, or Tarbert Holiday Park if you want something more traditional. Either makes a good base for combining this with a wider Kintyre and Cowal loop. Worth doing if you're in the area and want something authentic rather than touristy.
