Cruach an Draghair

The walk up Cruach an Draghair from Dunoon is a proper leg-stretcher with genuine rewards at the top. It's not a mountain in the dramatic sense - more of a determined hill that climbs 783 metres and takes a good couple of hours to reach the summit. The route itself is straightforward enough, following paths that wind through bracken and heather with gradually expanding views across the Firth of Clyde.

What makes it worthwhile is the panorama from the top. On a clear day you can see right across to the Scottish islands, with Arran and Bute spreading out below. The summit's a bit windswept and bare, which means the view isn't interrupted by trees - you get the full sweep of it. It's the kind of walk that appeals to hill walkers wanting something achievable without spending all day on the hill, and families with older kids who don't mind a steady climb.

You'll want three to four hours minimum if you're not rushing. The weather here changes quickly, so check conditions before you head out. Start early and you'll have the path largely to yourself. If you're staying at Glenfinart Caravan Park or Loch Eck just outside Dunoon, this is a natural day out - close enough not to waste time driving, far enough away to feel like proper countryside. Bring layers and water. The descent is easier on the legs than the way up, though your knees might disagree.
