Croslieve Mountain

A steep trek up moorland leads you to Croslieve Mountain, where the views across County Down shift from intimate to absolutely sprawling depending on how high you've climbed. The mountain itself isn't dramatic - no jagged peaks, no scrambling required - but that's rather the point. You're walking through actual working countryside, heather and grass underfoot, with the Mourne range visible behind you and the flatlands stretching towards Newry in front.

This is a proper rambler's spot, not a tourist attraction with signs and café stops. Allow two to three hours for a straightforward up-and-down walk from the base. The ascent is steady and relentless rather than technical, so families with older children will manage it, though younger legs might struggle with the gradient. There's no cost to visit - you're walking open moorland - and the best time is late summer when the heather's in bloom, though honestly, the exposed ridge gives decent views even on grey days.
