Cromwell Bottom Nature Reserve

The River Colden cuts through a proper ravine here, and that's the whole appeal of Cromwell Bottom. It's a steep-sided valley just outside Elland where you can walk woodland paths without seeing a road or hearing much traffic - which counts for something in West Yorkshire.

You'll find yourself among old beech and oak trees, with the river below. The paths are well-trodden and manageable for families, though there are sections that climb. Allow an hour minimum if you're just wandering, longer if you're the type who sits by the water with a coffee. Birdwatchers come here regularly enough that it's worth bringing binoculars.

It's free to access, which is the only reason to mention it really - no visitor centre, no facilities to speak of. That's either brilliant or disappointing depending on what you want from a nature reserve. If you need loos and a cafe, this isn't your spot. If you want twenty minutes of woodland breathing space between caravan park breakfast and the rest of your day, it works.

Staying at Elland Hall Farm Caravan Park puts you within walking distance, which is convenient. The reserve feels most peaceful on weekday mornings before the dog walkers arrive. Winter's actually better than summer - less undergrowth, clearer views through the trees to the valley sides, and you won't be sweltering on the climbs. It's a side attraction rather than a destination in itself, but it's there if you need it.
