Crompton's Streetlamp

There's a rather peculiar Victorian streetlamp standing in Essex that tells you more about industrial progress than any museum could. Crompton's Streetlamp is the real deal - an actual working example of the gas lamps that lit up British streets in the 1800s, created by the engineering firm that revolutionised street lighting across the country.

It's not dramatic or flashy. You'll find it near Ingatestone, and honestly, it's more of a pilgrimage for engineering enthusiasts and history buffs than a major day-out attraction. The lamp itself is modest but genuinely interesting if you care about how the Victorians tackled urban illumination. The walk around is pleasant enough, and the surrounding area gives you a proper sense of what Victorian Essex looked like.

Allow yourself twenty minutes or so if you're passing through - longer if you're really into industrial heritage. There's no admission charge that we can confirm, and it sits quite nicely within a broader Essex itinerary. If you're based at Stuarts Wood Campsite or The Courts Campsite, both within easy reach, you could combine this with wandering around Ingatestone itself, which has some decent period architecture worth a look.

Is it worth a dedicated trip? Probably not on its own. But if you're camping locally and interested in Victorian engineering, it's absolutely worth the brief detour. Don't expect crowds or facilities - just a piece of British industrial history standing exactly where it was meant to stand.
