Cromlet

The walk up Cromlet isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you work for the view. From Dunblane, you're looking at maybe 45 minutes to the summit if you keep a decent pace, though most people take longer to catch their breath and actually enjoy the climb. The peak itself sits at 716 metres, which makes it a proper hill rather than a gentle ramble - you'll notice your legs by the top.

What you get for your effort is a panorama across Perthshire that stretches properly far on a clear day. The Trossachs rise up to the north, and on decent weather you can pick out the Ochil Hills running along the horizon. The ground is rough underfoot, so proper boots aren't optional. In winter it can be boggy and treacherous, but spring through autumn treats walkers well.

This isn't a destination for young kids or anyone after an easy stroll. Serious walkers and anyone keen to bag a few Perthshire peaks will find it worthwhile though. The trail itself doesn't have much complexity - it's a straightforward ascent rather than a technical scramble - so navigation isn't the challenge here, fitness is.
