Cromen

Standing at 1,969 feet, this is the highest point on the Gower Peninsula, and the views across the Bristol Channel make the steep climb properly worthwhile. From the summit, you can see across to Devon and Somerset on clear days, with the entire sweep of Gower laid out below like a map.

The route up from Penmaen isn't for casual strollers - it's a proper hill walk that'll take about 90 minutes each way, with some scrambling near the top. Keen walkers will love it, but families with young children might find it a bit much. The path can get boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential.

What makes Cromen special is its isolation. Unlike the busier peaks in the Brecon Beacons, you'll often have the summit to yourself, especially on weekdays. The sense of being on top of the world is quite something when the weather's clear.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks near Three Cliffs Bay or Oxwich, it makes for a cracking day out - though allow most of the day for the round trip and a proper rest at the top. Pack a flask and sandwiches, because there's nowhere to buy anything once you start climbing. Best avoided in thick fog or high winds when the exposed summit becomes genuinely unpleasant.
