Croidh-Ia

The walk up Croidh-Ia isn't technically a mountain - it's more of a proper hill that punches well above its weight. Rising from near Newtonmore in the Highlands, it's the sort of place that rewards you with sudden views across the Spey Valley without demanding a full day's commitment.

You're looking at roughly two hours up and down, depending on fitness. The path is straightforward enough, nothing technical, but it's steep in places and can be boggy after rain. On a clear day the views open up nicely - moorland rolling away, the hills of the central Highlands beyond. On a damp day it's rather less spectacular, so check conditions before heading out.

Historically this area was MacPherson country, and if you're into that sort of thing there's something in just walking land that has that weight of story. But honestly, most people come for the exercise and the views rather than the heritage angle.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might struggle with the boggy bits and the steady gradient. It's free, naturally - no gates, no fees, just turn up and go. Early morning or late afternoon light makes the walk worthwhile on the camera front.

If you're staying at Invernahavon Caravan Park nearby, this makes an excellent half-day outing. It's close enough not to eat into your whole day, but substantial enough to feel like you've actually done something. Worth the drive from Newtonmore for a decent Highland walk without the crowds you get on the bigger peaks.
