Croft Park

The walk into Croft Park takes you through proper Cumbrian countryside, quiet enough that you'll hear the wind properly. It's a nature reserve just outside Dalton-in-Furness, and what makes it worth the trip is how unfussy it all feels - no visitor centres, no signage overload, just woodland and grassland doing their thing.

You'll spot birds here year-round, and if you time it right the wildflower meadows are genuinely good in late spring. There's something refreshing about a reserve that hasn't been massaged into submission for the leisure crowd. Local walkers and keen naturalists tend to be the people who know about this place, and that tells you something.

Family groups with older kids will manage fine - the paths are accessible enough and you can spend an hour or two poking around without feeling rushed. Younger children might find it a bit low-key unless they're genuinely interested in spotting things. Photographers should bring a decent lens; the light through the trees is often excellent.

If you're based at Harbour Lights Campsite up the coast, Croft Park works as a half-day break from the beach routine without driving far. It's the sort of place you visit for the walking and the air rather than a specific highlight you're ticking off. Bring proper shoes - the ground gets boggy after rain - and expect to spend two to three hours if you're taking it slowly.
