Càrn a' Chuilinn

The walk up Càrn a' Chuilinn isn't long, but it doesn't feel like cheating either. Starting from near Inverness, you're looking at a proper hill rather than a mountain - manageable for most fitness levels, though the terrain can be boggy underfoot depending on recent weather.

What makes it worth the effort is the summit view. On a clear day, you're looking across the Moray Firth towards Ben Wyvis, and the lochs below spread out like a map someone's unfurled just for you. The hill itself is moorland, heather and rough grass mostly, with cairns marking the way up. Count on about two hours there and back if you're taking it at a reasonable pace.

History enthusiasts might find the name interesting - it's Gaelic for "cairn of the narrow pass" - though there's not much to see beyond the landscape itself. This is hiking for the views rather than for ruins or archaeology. Families with decent walking legs will get something from it; very young children or anyone after a leisurely stroll might find it a bit much.
