Cròic-bheinn

The walk up Cròic-bheinn is a proper Highland slog, but the views from the top make every sweaty step worthwhile. This isn't a gentle stroll - it's a mountain that demands respect and decent boots. The peak sits above Strathcarron, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Applecross Peninsula and beyond. The route takes you through rough moorland and up rocky terrain, so allow a good four to five hours for a round trip if you're reasonably fit.

Walkers with mountain experience will absolutely rate this. It's not technical climbing, but it's steep enough to sort the committed from the casual. The views alone justify the effort - proper wilderness feels this far into the Highlands. Families might find it a bit much unless the kids are seasoned hill-goers; younger legs tend to struggle with the exposed sections.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit, so bring water and snacks. It's free to walk, naturally. The best time to go is May through September when the weather's most likely to play ball, though even then you need to check conditions carefully.
