Creswell Crags

The limestone gorge cuts through the landscape between Worksop and the wider Sherwood area like something from another age. Creswell Crags is genuinely old - we're talking Ice Age old, with evidence of human occupation going back 43,000 years. The caves themselves are the draw: a string of them carved into the rock face, dark mouths that feel properly atmospheric when you're standing in front of them.

You can walk the gorge trail and peer into several caves, though only Church Cave and Robin Hood Cave are accessible inside. The rock formations are striking, particularly if you catch them in decent light. The walk itself takes a couple of hours if you're thorough, and it's manageable for most fitness levels, though there are some climbs. Families with younger kids might find it engaging for an hour, then lose interest unless they're already keen on geology or archaeology.

It's free to walk the gorge, though there's a visitor centre with a small admission charge if you want the full museum experience and guided tours. The setting works well as part of a wider trip - you're close to Clumber Park, which has proper lodge accommodation and offers a completely different day out. Clumber itself is National Trust and excellent for a longer stay, so you could combine both: one day exploring the crags, another enjoying the parkland and lake.

Go in autumn or spring when it's not heaving with school groups. The place has genuine character, and the sense of deep time is hard to ignore standing in that gorge.
