Cresselly Big Wood

Ancient oaks and towering beech trees form a proper cathedral of canopy here, making this one of Pembrokeshire's most atmospheric woodland walks. The forest floor crunches satisfyingly underfoot - a thick carpet of leaves that's been building for centuries.

Families with young children will find the main paths manageable, though you'll want to keep little ones close as some of the deeper tracks can be a bit maze-like. Dog walkers absolutely love it here. The woodland feels genuinely wild in places, with fallen logs creating natural obstacle courses that teenagers seem to navigate by instinct.

What strikes you first is the sheer size of some of these trees - they've clearly been growing here since long before Tenby became a tourist hotspot. Bird watchers do well here too, especially in early morning when the wood comes alive with song.

No admission fee that I could find, and parking seems to be along the roadside. Allow a good hour for a proper wander, though you could easily spend half a day if the weather's kind. The paths can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are worth bringing.

For families staying at nearby parks like Cross Park Holiday Village or Florence Springs, it's a lovely contrast to beach days. Just a short drive from your caravan and you're in proper countryside.
