Creech Barrow Hill

Views across the Purbeck Hills and down to Poole Harbour make the steady climb up this 200-metre hill feel properly worthwhile. You're looking at about 45 minutes to reach the summit from the car park near the bottom, following well-marked footpaths that wind through heathland and patches of gorse. The final approach gets a bit steep, but nothing that would trouble reasonably fit walkers.

Families with older children will love this one - it's challenging enough to feel like an achievement without being a proper slog. Younger kids might struggle with the gradient towards the top. Dog walkers are in their element here, with plenty of space to let dogs off the lead on the heath below.

What sets Creech Barrow apart from other Dorset peaks is the sheer variety of landscape you see from the top. Wareham sits in the valley below, while Corfe Castle is visible on clear days. The contrast between the industrial sprawl around Poole and the ancient heath feels quite dramatic.

Most people allow two hours for the round trip, including time to appreciate the panorama. Early morning visits work best - fewer crowds and often clearer air for those longer views. The hill sits perfectly between several campsites around Wareham, making it an easy day out from places like Norden Farm Campsite or Luckford Wood.
