Creagan Fhamhair, Fort

Creagan Fhamhair is a modest but genuinely interesting Iron Age broch ruin that sits quietly on the coastline near Gairloch. It's not much to look at these days - we're talking scattered stones and broken walls - but if you're into archaeology or Scottish prehistory, it's absolutely worth the detour. The broch itself would have been a fortified roundhouse, probably built somewhere between 500 and 100 BC, and standing here you get a proper sense of how these ancient communities positioned themselves defensively along the northern coast.

The walk to reach it isn't strenuous, though the landscape is exposed and windswept - classic Highland. Bring good boots and weather that won't embarrass you. The real appeal here is the setting rather than dramatic ruins. You're looking out toward the sea with next to nobody else around, which is exactly when Scottish archaeology starts to make sense to you.

If you're camping at Sands Caravan & Camping just down the road, this slots into a morning's exploration nicely alongside coastal walks. You won't spend more than an hour here, so don't build your day around it, but couple it with the beaches and villages around Gairloch and you've got something proper. The site is free and accessible year-round, though winter weather can be brutal. Spring or early autumn gives you the best combination of daylight and wind direction. Frankly, it's the kind of place that only grabs you if you actually care about Iron Age settlement patterns. For everyone else, it's a lovely excuse for a coastal walk.
