Creagan Dubh

The walk up Creagan Dubh rewards you with one of those rare Highland views that actually lives up to the hype. It's a modest peak by Scottish standards - nothing requiring specialist gear or a full day's commitment - but the perspective from the top across the Dornoch Firth and towards Ben Loyal is properly special.

You'll get the best out of this if you're already in the Tain area and fancy a couple of hours' leg-stretching. It's the kind of walk where you can turn back whenever you've had enough, though most people push to the summit. The terrain is rough underfoot in places, so decent boots matter more than fitness. Weather swings quickly up here, so check the forecast before you head out - a clear day transforms it, while mist rolls in from nowhere and kills the views entirely.

From Parkdean Resorts Grannie's Heilan' Hame Holiday Park just over six miles away, it's an easy drive for a morning sortie. The park itself gets mixed reviews, but it's well-positioned for accessing the surrounding Highland walks. Creagan Dubh fits nicely into a broader exploration of this part of Sutherland - you're close enough to the coast to combine it with other outings without feeling like you're wasting petrol.

It's free, obviously, and you'll need maybe ninety minutes from car to summit and back down again. Family-friendly provided the kids are competent walkers. Worth the detour if you're passing through, though nothing that'll pull you out of your way specially.
