Creag nan Eun

The walk up Creag nan Eun, just outside Crieff, takes you to one of those hills that punches well above its weight. It's not particularly high - nothing that'll leave you gasping - but the views across Perthshire are genuinely excellent. On a clear day you're looking out over Loch Earn to the west and rolling farmland in every other direction. The Gaelic name means "Hill of Birds" and you'll understand why once you're up there; golden eagles and red kites wheel overhead if you're lucky.

This is a proper walker's hill rather than a destination attraction. You'll need decent boots and a couple of hours to do it properly, including time to soak in the view from the top. The path itself is clear enough, though it gets steep in sections and can be boggy after rain - come prepared. It's the sort of walk that rewards you physically without requiring mountaineering skills, which makes it ideal for anyone who likes to stretch their legs but isn't after a serious alpine challenge.

Families with older kids will get plenty from it. Younger ones might find the slog tedious; there's no visitor centre or café at the summit, just you and the landscape. Free to access, as with most Scottish hills. Pair it with a stay at Loch Earn Leisure Park just down the road - you could knock this walk out in the morning and still have the afternoon for the water sports or amenities there. Crieff itself is handy for supplies and a decent lunch afterwards.
